Motorists urged to drive safely as hundreds of athletes set to hit the road for TriLaois this Saturday

Trilogy Triathlon Club will host its annual club race, TriLaois tomorrow Saturday, April 1, around Portlaoise.

It’s the largest one day sporting event in the county each year. Less than 400 triathletes from 25 counties will be competing.

TriLaois will host a large number of first timers to the sport. It is the opening race of the Triathlon Ireland Calendar. Race Headquarters will be at Laois Leisure, Portlaoise.

There are two race distances. The Sprint Triathlon Race a 750m pool based swim, 20km cycle, and a 5 km run. Try-a-Tri which is aimed mainly at beginners which comprises of a shorter swim distance (400m), 20 km cycle/5k run.

There will be a large volume of triathletes cycling and running in the vicinity of Portlaoise town and outskirts between the hours of 8.40am and 2pm particularly around Laois Leisure, Borris Road, Ratheven, Dublin Rd, Old Dublin Road, New Inn Roundabout and the Ridge Road hosts the 5km run.

“There will be a Garda presence and Race Marshals on all junctions around the course to make the event as safe as possible for all road users,” says race director Billy Treacy.

“Please follow the instructions of the Gardaí and Marshals. We would ask all motorists to drive safely and to please be patient and mindful of the athletes safety for the few hours the event is in progress.

“The TriLaois Race Committee wishes to extend a very warm welcome to each and everyone of our competitors that have travelled to take part in our clubs local race.

“We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and memorable days racing in Portlaoise. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.”
