There is deep sadness in Laois following the passing of the well-known and highly-regarded Pat Hooban.
Mr Hooban, a well-known builder and a very popular member of Portlaoise rugby and Ballyfin and Portlaoise GAA communities, has died.
Of Cherrygarth, Portlaois
Pat was a noted sportsman, playing with football and hurling with Ballyfin in his younger years before transferring to Portlaoise.
There, he won a Laois senior hurling title with in 1987 and played in the heartbreaking Leinster club final loss to Rathnure of Wexford that same year.
With Portlaoise Rugby Club, he played at a range of different levels as well as coaching a number of teams after he retired from playing.
Off the pitch he was a key figure and did huge work in the redevelopment of the clubhouse and dressing room facilities.
For work, Pat was a highly-regarded builder who worked on a huge amount of projects in Laois and surrounding areas
Pat is married to his loving wife Póilín and is also survived by his daughter Emma who is an extremely talented rugby player.
Emma has 14 Caps for Ireland and was selected on the Ireland squad for the Japanese tour last August.
She currently play with Blackrock College who were successful winners in the AIL final against Railway Union – a first win for Blackrock in the last 14 years.
Pat is predeceased by his parents Joe and Maureen Hooban and his brother Peter.
Pat is also deeply regretted by his sisters Margie (Scully) (Mountmellick), Alice (McEniry) (Mountmellick), brothers Dan, Joe and Kevin, Aunt Rose (Meleady) (Dublin), Aunt Sheila (Thornhill) (London), Uncle Peter (Redmond) (Redcastle, Mountrath)
Pat will be reposing at his residence from 5pm – 8pm on Wednesday 22 with Rosary at 8pm.
Removal from his residence on Thursday morning to arrive at St Peter & Paul’s Church, Portlaoise for 12noon Mass. Burial after in local cemetery. House private on Thursday morning.
