A memorial 5km run in aid of Teac Tom and in memory of a Laois dad will take place this evening.
Owen Hiney, who worked as a prison officer in Portlaoise, died by suicide on February 16, 2020 – exactly three years ago today.
He is survived by his sons Conor and Darragh, daughters Rachel and Bronagh, mother Josie, brothers Jimmy and Billy, sisters Nancy and Brigid, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
In April of that year, Owen’s son Darragh shaved his head in a bid to raise money for Mental Health Ireland.
Many of his friends joined in and more than €5,000 was raised for the charity.
Three years on, the Hiney family are raising money again and this time it is going to Teac Tom.
This is a free counselling service for people that have been affected by suicide and for people that struggle with poor mental health.
Runs will take place in Dublin/Limerick/Cork and Portlaoise during the day and it all culminates in a 5k walk/run this evening.
This will take take place in Colt GAA at 7.30pm on Thursday evening and donations can be made at the event.
Conor Hiney said: “Teac Tom suicide prevention a great cause and donations can be made on the night.
“It is to show people that’s it’s okay to be not okay.
“If the walk was to help just one person – or get that person to ask for help – that is our goal.”
