There is deep sadness in Portlaoise this week following the passing of a Laois man who has been described as ‘an absolute gentleman’.
Tony Greene, of St Brigid’s Place in Portlaoise, passed away unexpectedly on Monday January 16.
Mr Greene was remembered fondly at this morning’s meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District with Sinn Fein’s Caroline Dwane Stanley leading the tributes.
She said: “I’d like to express my condolences to the Greene family following their bereavement.
“Tony was a young man and his passing was totally unexpected – my thoughts are with them all.”
Cllr Willie Aird said: “I only spoke to Tony on Saturday and I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news.
“Tony was an absolute gentleman and went about his work in his own way.
“He was a very nice fella and always had a good word for everyone.
“He gave years of work to Browne’s as well – he will be dearly missed.”
Cllrs Noel Tuohy, Catherine Fitzgerald, John Joe Fennelly, Barry Walsh and Thomasina Connell all joined in the tributes to the late Mr Greene.
Predeceased by his parents Tony and Annie, Tony is sadly missed by his brothers Michael, Christopher, Joe and Paul, sisters Mary and Ann-Marie, nieces, nephews, sisters in law, brother in law, grandnieces, grandnephews, his loving aunt Ellie Foran, relatives, friends and neighbours.
He will be reposing at Keegan’s funeral home on Wednesday from 6.30pm with rosary at 8pm.

Burial will take place immediately afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.
