The HSE has provided another update on the status of the out of hours GP service – MIDOC – in Laois.
At the end of last year, it emerged that the company behind the service was to cease trading and there were fears the service would end too.
But then Sinn Fein TD Brian Stanley described this solution as a ‘interim solution‘ only.
Now, a HSE spokesperson has provided further clarity on the service. They say it will remain in its current form until January 15.
Although, what will happen after that remains to be seen.
They said: “The Midoc Out of Hours Service is a HSE run service from HSE premises – MIDOC GP CLG covers Tullamore, Portlaoise, Longford and Mullingar.
“Athlone GP Out of Hours (OHH) is a separate entity and is not affected.
“As outlined in our press statement December 23, the HSE has engaged a 3rd party agency (that has already been providing medical support to MIDOC GP CLG) to provide appropriate cover for until January 15 based on normal and scheduled GPOOH practice and rosters while the HSE confirms an alternative provider.
“This means that as of January 1, patients call the same number and attend whichever of the existing treatment centres they are directed to attend, if required.
“The HSE is working to ensure that the interim solution will be extended to facilitate discussions on a long term solution.
“The HSE will provide ongoing updates as we support the GPs and members of the public due to the untimely departure of MIDOC GP CLG.”
