The New Year’s Day walk in Timahoe has long been a reliable date in the diary – and after a couple of years off, it’s returning in style this year.
For years it was a great fundraiser for the Irish Wheelchair Association and the local Fatima Invalid Fund.
And for years it was organised by the much-loved local community man Johnny Dalton.
For the first time in over 20 years it didn’t take place in January 2021 – and only a short time later Johnny sadly passed away.
Last year it was intended to host the walk again, but it was cancelled at short notice due to a funeral in Timahoe at the same time.
But this year it’s back. And Mo Nerney, the star player on the Laois ladies football team that won the All Ireland final in Croke Park, is set to be the celebrity name to start the walk.
A feature of the walk over the years has been the presence of a high-profile personality to lead the walk off, which takes in the scenic Fossey Mountains as part of the loop.
Alison Miller, Zach Tuohy, Pat Critchley, Ross Munnelly and the McDonalds from Ireland’s Fittest Family have been among the people to lead the walk.
And this year Nerney, who plays her club football with Timahoe, is to do the honours.
The walk will begin at 1pm. For further information, you can contact David Dalton on 087 1305448.
