Gardai are continuing to investigate all the circumstances of a suspected fatal assault on a woman that occurred yesterday afternoon in Mountmellick.
The woman who was killed has been named locally as Sharon Crean who was originally from Arklow in Wicklow.
She is the mother of a young boy and LaoisToday understands that she was stabbed before she died.
Aged in her 30s, Ms Crean was discovered with serious injuries at approximately 4.45pm on Wednesday at a residence at College Avenue in the town.
A man in his 30s has been arrested as part of this investigation and he is currently being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
A post-mortem examination is to be conducted today and the results of which will determine the course of this investigation.
A Garda statement last night provided the latest update on the status of the case.
They said: “A man in his 30s has been arrested as part of this investigation and he is currently being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
“The woman’s body remains at the scene which is currently preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who has any information that can assist with this investigation to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
“Investigations are ongoing. An Garda Síochána has no further information available at this time.”
