The Laois Hurlers Golfing Society hosted their final outing of the year on Saturday last in the beautiful surroundings of the Heath Golf Club.
Course conditions were perfect, despite the recent spell of bad weather. With players taking full advantage, a very competitive battle ensued.
When the scores were tallied, it was Timmy Williams who claimed the top prize, closely followed home by Cathal Whelan.
John Taylor took the bronze medal, George Fennell came in 4th, Larry Phelan 5th with Tommy Moore in 6th spot.
John Taylor with a stunning drive down the 13th took home the longest drive prize, while Jim Kells just edged out John to clinch the Nearest to the Pin. Visitors Prize went to P J Mulhall.
Following some outstanding performances, Fint Scully was crowned “Golfer of the Year” for 2022.
Sadly, Laois lost two hurling greats in recent days. Billy Delaney from Ballinakill, a member of the Laois 1964 Leinster Championship winning minor team and Jackie Cuddy from Camross who represented Laois at minor level before emigrating to England where he made a huge impact on the GAA community in his adoptive country.
Since the foundation of the Society there can be little doubt but that it has delivered many hours of enjoyable golf to its members.
Its main aim is to continue contact amongst former players together with maintaining links between present day hurlers and those that have hung up their boots.
A spokesperson said: “As we gear up for the 2023 season, we look forward to welcoming new members on board.
“Finally, sincere thanks to all our supporters, in particular, our outgoing Captain, Carl Grant.”
