A call has been made for safety works to be carried out on a road near a well known Laois pub.
Fianna Fail Councillor Padraig Fleming brought forward a motion at the recent Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District.
He called for Laois County Council to install additional signage and road markings on the N78 at Pedigree Corner near Ballylinan.
This would be at both approaches to the crossroads in the interests of health and safety as traffic travels at excessive speeds on this stretch of road which causes a danger to traffic crossing the N78.
Engineer Farhan Nasiem said: “Road design will engage with Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Safety Engineer to propose and implement safety measures at these locations.”
Councillor Fleming welcomed this but said he feared that when the TII are involved, decisions can be slow.
Cllr Fleming said: “This is a major road and signage is required on both sides.
“The TII can be slow to make decisions and we need something done on this urgently.”
Cllr Fleming also called for a plan to be developed for the roads in the Ballyadams area including signage and road markings.
He said: “This is a big project and I am aware it could take a few years to solve, but it must be done.”
Engineer Philip McVeigh said: “The Council has carried out a survey of the roads in this area.
“Roads for surfacing will be prioritized and included in the next road’s programme.
“Additional road markings and signage will also be installed at the identical locations in this area.”
