Another Grand Final for Tuohy as Geelong record big ‘Preliminary’ final win

Zach Tuohy

Zach Tuohy will play in a second Grand Final in three years following Geelong’s big win over the Brisbane Lions today in the ‘Preliminary Final’ (semi-final) in the famed MCG stadium in Melbourne.

Portlaoise man Tuohy was on the losing side when Geelong played in the final in 2020 – but they have been the form team all season and will once again play in the decider, which is on next weekend.

The Grand Final – an absolutely massive occasion in Melbourne that is treated as state holiday – will be Tuohy’s 250th professional game since he first moved to Australia in 2009.

Of the over 12,500 players to have played in the AFL, only 324 (less than 2%) have reached the 250-game milestone.

Though no contract has been signed yet, it’s expected that Tuohy will remain with Geelong next season – when he should surpass Jim Stynes’ 264 appearances, which is the record for an Irish player.

Apart from Tadhg Kennelly, Tuohy is the only other Irish player to play in an AFL Grand Final – Kennelly, with the Sydney Swans in 2005, is the only Irish player to win one.

Geelong beat Brisbane 120 to 49 today and were comfortable from first whistle to last.

They will now play Sydney Swans or Collingwood in the final next Saturday.
