The coming academic year will see some changes for staff and students at Portlaoise Institute.
The development of the range of courses offered by Portlaoise Institute has paved the way for the Institute to open a second campus in the town.
One course that has also seen some development is the Pre-Paramedics Course.
This year Portlaoise Institute has partnered with Medicall Emergency Medical Training who are a Private Emergency Medical Technician Training College based in Dublin.
Collaboration between the teachers at Portlaoise Institute and Medicall Instructors have resulted in students now being offered four bespoke workshops to be delivered by Medicall Instructors over the course of the academic year running parallel to the curriculum offered by Portlaoise Institute.
The workshops will be introducing students to key areas such as Ambulance Operations, Physiology and Patient Assessment as well Airway and Fracture Management.
The core curriculum offered by Portlaoise Institute has also been reviewed with Anatomy and Physiology being added to the curriculum to be taught in semester two overlapping with concepts delivered in the Medicall workshops.
A new paramedic style uniform sourced locally from Fyffes in Abbeyleix has been introduced to coincide with the more practical elements introduced to the course for the coming year.
As well as the new bespoke workshops students will also undertake training in ManualHandling and First Aid Responder.
There will also be additional workshops to assist students completing competency based applications which are widely used in EMT and National Ambulance Service Recruitment Campaigns.
