Mountmellick Utd 1 Birr Town 0
CCFL Over 35s League
A late penalty from Mark Grennan was enough for Mountmellick to claim their first ever Over-35s league title in dramatic fashion on Monday night.
United travelled to Birr knowing only a win would be enough to prevent the hosts from becoming the champions and it was no surprise that the game was a tense affair with nothing between the two teams.
United started well but only a super Matsy Forde save denied Birr in the opening half.
All square at the break with Birr having slightly more of the ball and that pattern continued in the second half with the Offaly outfit looking the likelier to score.
As the minutes ticked by Mountmellick started to push more men forward looking for that one chance and it came when a Robbie Hibbitts flick on saw Deccie Fenlon through on goal.
He was chopped down in the box for a penalty kick was was duly dispatched to send the United lads and their large band of supporters wild.
Birr pushed for a late equaliser but United soaked up the pressure and the league title was theirs.
