Laois primary school set for ‘marathon’ fundraiser on Friday for outdoor classroom and garden

Portarlington Boys National School

The primary school students from Portarlington Boys National School are set to take part in a marathon fundraiser on Friday.

The school will run a total of 42km on their school track – with each lap representing a total of 250 metres.

The school will aim to run 168 laps of the track in total with each class from Junior Infants up to Sixth class taking part.

The idea is that it will be a continuous flow of students running, replicating a proper marathon.

The school intends to use this fundraiser to raise money for the further development of their outdoor garden and classroom.

Each child has been provided with a sponsorship card and the hope is to build a new agility course.

The central piece of the garden is the Trinity Loop, which Barcelona based artist, Anaisa Franco, has been commissioned to create as part of the Percent For Art Project.

Flowing from the Trinity Loop will be four separate areas: The Sensory Garden, The Outdoor Classroom, The Vegetable Garden and The Wild Willow Woodland.

The garden project has developed from a plan that Sandra O’ Neill, a parent of one of the students, which was created when they were initially looking for another space for the boys to enjoy.

Having sown the seeds of creativity, Ms Rafferty, has developed Sandra’s plan to incorporate the Trinity Loop and four interconnecting spaces, in their very own natural wonderland.

The marathon gets underway at 9am and is expected to take four hours to complete.
