An iconic rural Laois pub has been placed on the market.
The Sportsman’s Inn in Cullohill, owned by the O’Connell family for generations, is up for sale with an asking price of €300,000.
The pub is the home place of Darina Allen, who grew up in Cullohill, and has been run for a long number of years by William O’Connell.
It is described by auctioneer David O’Connell as a “substantial two-storey property incorporating spacious bard and lounge area, television room, meeting room, tradtional kitchen with original solid fuel cooker, store rooms, ladies and gents toilets.
“There is a large landscaped enclosed garden to the rear with potential for events etc.
“There is a residential area upstairs with separate entrance. Accommodation includes kitchen, sitting room, three bedrooms and bathroom.”
In all the property extends to 232 square metres and is being sold by private treaty.
“A landmark in the countryside, this was a one-stop-shop for the needs of the community for decades, from a grocer to undertakers to petrol station, not to mention a stop-off for travellers for pub grub on the main road from Dublin to Cork,” was how the Food and Wine magazine described the premises in an indepth feature on the O’Connell family in 2019.
