Ten years. How time really flies.
At the end of May in 2012, the Ballyroan and Abbeyleix Athletic Club hosted a 10K ‘Heart of Laois’ run which drew over 200 athletes of all abilities.
On the last Sunday of May, on a roasting hot day, the runners tackled the highways and byways around Abbeyleix,
With the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel as the headquarters, the race took in Main Street, the Portlaoise Road, Tonduff Cross, Monument Junction, Mountrath Road, Blackhill, Oldtown, Ballacolla Road before finishing back at the Manor.
The 10k was the final leg of the club’s hugely popular Get Fit for Summer challenge.
The series had attracted large numbers of runners and walkers to events in Abbeyleix, Ballyroan and Durrow over consecutive weeks.
The race attracted a quality field, including winner Freddy Keron Sittuk-Kiprotich from Kenya who completed the course in a blistering time of 30.48.
