Following a two year break, the annual Heywood Community School Awards night took place last Thursday evening, May 19, in the school gym.
In front of a large congregation, students from the school were recognised for their achievements in the categories of cultural and pastoral awards, sporting awards and academic awards.
The evening culminated with the presentation of the main awards and the Bank of Ireland Student of the Year for 2022.
Ms Michele Condron, a representative of the Parents’ Association presented the cultural and pastoral awards.
Mr Tom Kelly, St Joseph’s club footballer and GAA All Star award winner who was a past pupil of Heywood CS, returned to present the Sporting Awards.
On the evening Tom presented two of his jerseys which he wore when representing Ireland against Australia in the International Rules Series of 2003 to the school.
Ms Yvonne Palmer, a representative of Bank of Ireland Abbeyleix presented the Student of the Year Award.
The school traditional music group under the guidance of Ms. Julianne Woods entertained the crowd at the interval.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of medals to the All Ireland Senior Colleges Football winning team.
The winner of the Bank of Ireland Student of the Year for 2022 was Laura Vessey from Abbeyleix.
