‘Bike Week’ is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling which is taking place across Laois this week.
On Thursday, staff and students from Portlaoise College joinedin – becoming the first school to take part.
Ahead of the main event, the school undertook a number of activities to prepare such as learning to cycle with Laois Sports Partnership and a safety talk from Garda.
On Thursday, they did a 9km loop around Portlaoise. It all kicked off at 10am with bike safety check and they left the school just after 10.45am with a Garda escort all around Portlaoise.
45 students took part – 1st and 2nd years alongside the members of the Green School committee.
The teachers behind the initiative were Sarah Rowan, Adele Wilson and Ian Hennessy and they were joined on the cycle by John Fitzpatrick, Chris Gleeson and Keith McClearn (Deputy Principal).
The aim of the event was to encourage students to use the bike lanes around Portlaoise to cycle to School.
Photographer Denis Byrne was there to capture some great pictures.
