The Lithuanian Ambassador to Ireland, Marijus Gudynas, visited a number of schools in Laois during recently to commemorate European Day.
He was accompanied by Laois TD Sean Fleming as the pair marked Ireland’s 50th anniversary of the referendum to join the European Union.
On Monday May 9, Minister Fleming and Ambassador Marijus Gudynas visited Shanahoe NS, Camross NS, Paddock NS, Raheen NS and Dunamase College, Portlaoise
On Tuesday May 10, Minister Fleming was present in St. Pauls NS, Mountmellick, Holy Family Senior School, Portlaoise, and Barrowhouse NS.
While the final visit took place on Wednesday May 11 where Minister Fleming went to Errill NS.
The schools which were included for visits had participated in the Europe 50 Blue Star Programme and European Parliament Ambassador School Programme.
Students displayed work they had completed on their projects and there was also time allowed during our visits for some questions from the students to Minister Fleming and Ambassador Marijus Gudynas.
Minister Fleming said: “I would like to thank all the schools for the very warm welcome we received.
“There were great efforts made by the teachers and students which included students playing music, wearing the colours and clothes representing EU countries and having their project work displayed in their classrooms.
“It goes without saying that the most interesting part of each of the visit were the very detailed and interesting questions posed by the students in relation to Europe and all other political matters.”
