Like everything the Rose of Tralee event had to be postponed for two years running because of the Coronavirus.
And though it is returning to its pre-pandemic rituals with county events around the country in the coming weeks, a new Laois Rose won’t be crowned again until 2023.
Ahead of the 2019 event a new format was introduced whereby counties would only select a Rose every second year.
All of the Roses selected in a particular year would then appear on stage in the Dome in Tralee and feature on live TV. The regional element was done away with.
Laois was one of the counties that had an event in 2019 – when Sarah Bergin from Clonad was selected.
She duly represented Laois in Tralee with her good-humoured performance coming in for a brilliant reaction on social media.
There was to be no Laois Rose in 2020 but the event, which was first established in 1959, didn’t go ahead in any case, nor in 2021.
It means that while counties like Kilkenny will have an event in 2022, Laois won’t select a Rose again until 2023.
