The death has occurred of Fr Kevin Daly, the former president of Cistercian College Roscrea and former Abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey.
A native of Galway, he served as president of the boarding school from 1984 to 1997.
He had previously served as Games Master and Dean of Discipline and had a strong involvement in the rugby and athletics programme for the students throughout the years.
As president he was highly regarded by the students, staff and parents and his kind nature was accompanied by a strictness that was widely respected.
In the parlance of the school community, he was afforded the highest praise: “he was sound”.
Fr Kevin later spent a time as Abbot of the adjoining Mount St Joseph Abbey, meaning that over the course of his life, he fulfilled almost every role in the school and monastery.
As a student he sat his Leaving Cert in 1953 and returned to join the monastery in 1958.
“There are many generations of past students, past parents and past staff who have fond memories of Dom Kevin during their time in the college,” wrote current principal Gerry Grealish in an email to past students.
“For some of the current staff, Dom Kevin appointed them to their positions. We offer our sympathy to Dom Kevin’s family and to the monastic community of Mount St Joseph Abbey.”
Funeral arrangements announced later.
