The development of a Blueway track from Athy to Rathangan is almost fully complete – though large sections have been in use since last year.
Vicarstown is one of its busiest spots and the recent addition of a natural community recreational area is proving hugely popular.
Located adjacent to the track – which is a safe walking/running/cycling route along the banks of the Grand Canal – the play area consists of a tunnel, various balance beams, a slide and its augmented by the presence of a digital clock, meaning children can time their run through the obstacle and back.
The finishing touches have been put on the Vicarstown Canal Side Community Recreational Area in recent weeks and is the result of a lot of hard work by the Stradbally-Vicarstown-Timahoe Activity and Wellness Hub.
Support was provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development Clár funding.
The project consists of a beautiful community Picnic Area which includes wheelchair accessible seating and tables, a natural play area for the kids which includes an obstacle course and storytelling area.
There are new fishing stands which are also wheelchair accessible and plenty of signage giving details about the local area.
The final jewel in the crown will be a colourful, fragrant wild flower meadow.
This new development perfectly complements the wonderful Barrow Blueway, and the existing infrastructure along the canal – the SVT Canoe and Kayak clubhouse, equipment storage area, boardwalk and disability access jetty, wheelchair accessible portaloos, and bike racks.
This whole project was very carefully thought out -giving a firm nod to to the environment, sustainability, inclusivity, accessibility and value for money.
It was planned and delivered by local contractors, causing as little disturbance as possible to the local flora, fauna and wildlife.
The play area nestles lovingly into the landscape and is in perfect keeping with all that surrounds it.
