A fundraiser has been launched for a talented Laois teenager following news of his cancer diagnosis.

Eoin Coss, who hails from Mountmellick, received the shock news recently.

The 13-year-old is a very talented sports person and plays both football and soccer for Mountmellick.

2 – All-Ireland winner appointed manager of Laois hurling club for 2022 season

A former All-Ireland winning hurler has been appointed as manager of a Laois senior club for the 2022.

All-Ireland winning Clare midfielder Ollie Baker has taken over at The Harps for the coming season.

The two-time All Ireland winner with Clare, who is stationed as a Garda in Tullamore, has managed Offaly in the past.

3 – Laois midwife claims prestigious award and €2,500 for Portlaoise Hospital for ‘beyond incredible’ patient care

A Laois midwife has been given a prestigious award and €2,500 for Portlaoise Hospital for her ‘beyond incredible’ patient care.

Claire Fitzpatrick, Clinical Midwife Specialist in Lactation in Portlaoise Hospital, has been awarded the WaterWipes Pure Foundation Fund Trophy.

While the €2,500 prize towards her healthcare workplace the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.

4 – County hurler moves to Rosenallis as 32 transfers approved by Laois GAA

Laois hurler Donnchadh Hartnett has returned to his original club Rosenallis from Mountmellick, one of 32 transfer applications approved by Laois GAA this week.

Hartnett played underage with Rosenallis before him and his brother Chris moved to Mountmellick.

A regular with the Laois senior hurling team in recent years, Donnchadh helped Mountmellick to Junior ‘B’ and Junior ‘A’ back-to-back successes in 2017 and 2018. Chris was manager of those teams.

5 – Two arrested following thefts from vehicles in two Laois towns

Gardai have made two arrests following a number of thefts from two Laois towns recently.

The incidents occurred in Mountrath and Portarlington while Gardai say the men have also been charged with tapping of bank cards at retail outlets.

6 – Shock and sadness at the death of the well-known Mick Doran

There was sadness in the Clonad community and beyond with the news of the sudden passing of Mick Doran.

Mick worked with Eircom for many years before setting up his own insulation company in recent times.

Very well known in sporting circles he was centre-forward on the Clonad team that famously won the Laois senior hurling championship title in 1992. 

7 – Who’s getting what? The full list of Laois recipients as almost €4 million in sports grants awarded to Laois clubs

Almost €4 million in grants has been awarded to a range of clubs and organisations in Laois in the latest round of Sports Capital Grants announced by Minister for Sport Jack Chambers.

A record €3,317,114 under the Sports Capital Projects scheme has been given to a total of 55 Laois sports clubs while an additional €663,272 has been awarded to three projects under the Regional Sports Capital Grants.

The funding is for a range of development work being carried out by various clubs and groups – including floodlights, pitch development and walking tracks.

A well-known Laois tillage farmer has been listed among the winners at this year’s Glanbia grain supplier of the year awards.

Bobby Miller, who farms at Rathmore near Stradbally, and is known across the country as chairman of the Irish Grain Growers Group has been announced as the winner of the winter feed barley (Cassia) award.

9 – Arrest made following discovery of drugs worth €250,000 in Laois

A 42-year-old man appeared in court following the discovery of €250,000 worth of drugs in Laois this week.

On Wednesday of this week, as part of ongoing operations targeting the sale and distribution of controlled drugs, Gardaí from the Laois Drugs Unit and Portlaoise Garda Station searched two premises in the vicinity of Ballyfin.

In the course of the searches Gardaí seized 156 cannabis plants worth €124,800 along with quantities of cannabis valued at €120,000 and suspected amphetamine worth €10,000.

The Castletown hurlers have turned to club legends John O’Sullivan and David Cuddy to guide their fortunes in 2022.

The two take over from Paddy Mullaney who has been in charge for the past two seasons.
