There was plenty of stars of the future on the display in the Laois Cumann na mBunscol football finals 20 years ago in the autumn of 2000.

Shanahoe and Rath enjoyed success in the boys and girls finals while there was joy for Killenard, Derrylamogue, Abbeyleix, Clough and Timahoe in the boys and for Graiguecullen, Ratheniska, Clonaslee and Mountrath won the girls finals.

Future Laois hurler Dayne Peacock scored 3-1 for Abbeyleix in their win over a Scoil Bhride Portlaoise side that included future Laois footballer Gareth Dillon.

Current soccer star Kylie Murphy scored 2-1 for Graiguecullen against Abbeyleix while future Laois footballers John O’Loughlin and Robbie Kehoe were on opposite sides as Killenard got the better of Mountmellick.

Twins Michael and Sean Ramsbottom scored 1-2 and 2-0 respectively as Timahoe got the better of Raheen with Padraig Kelly leading the scoring with 1-7.

Tim Delaney scored 1-6 for Clough in their final win over a Camross side that Andrew Collier scored 1-3 for.

Future Laois ladies footballer Noirin Kirwan was on the scoresheet for both the Shanahoe boys and girls teams though Emma Fairbrother was the scorer in chief – scoring 5-1 for the girls and 1-0 for the boys team.

James Jackson for Rosenallis was another to catch the eye as he hit 4-1 though they were beaten by a point in a classic against Shanahoe.
