After almost two years closed to the general public, the Portlaoise Leisure Centre will re-open on Monday, February 28.
Now operating under the name ‘Laois Leisure – Portlaoise’ under the management of Sean Quirke and operating alongside the Portarlington facility, the news will be warmly welcomed in both Portlaoise and across the county given how widely used the facility has been for years.
The facility was initially closed in March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic first hit but it was announced that summer that it would not be re-opening due to huge financial burden on the board that were running the facility.
It was later announced that Laois County Council would place the facility under a new combined setup, managed by Sean Quirke who has been overseeing the Portarlington setup for a number of years.
“We are delighted to announce the return of public access to the swimming pools and gym in Laois Leisure-Portlaoise from Monday February 28th, 2022,” said Sean Quirke in a statement today.
“Like many other businesses we were impacted by Covid related staff shortages and recruitment challenges which in addition to some outstanding contractor works have prevented re-opening before now.
“Thankfully, our recruitment efforts have secured a core team of staff to facilitate the initial re-opening phase of the facilities.
“We understand that many of you are eagerly awaiting the return of these incredibly important and necessary facilities in such a vibrant town and county and look forward to seeing you all in the very near future.
“We are continuing to work behind the scenes with Laois County Council to have the facilities, systems and staff ready to provide you with the safe, friendly and efficient services you deserve.
