Rory Culliton from Portlaoise – a man remembered as a gentleman and highly-respected in the local sport, business and community circles – passed away this week.
Mr Culliton, who was aged 70, died after a short illness.
Rory is survived by his wife Mary, his son Ross and partner Marie, his daughter Jill and her partner Jimmy and his son Steven and his wife Zara.
Much loved by his sister Ann, his brother David and their families. Pre-deceased by his brother Paul. Sadly missed by his sisters in law, brothers in law and their families, his godchildren (Rozamond and Aoife) and his many friends.
He was remembered at his funeral mass on Tuesday as a man who contributed widely to his community – as a former captain and president of The Heath Golf club, a member of the church choir in Portlaoise and for being heavily involved in the Failte Isteach group, which helped newcomers to Ireland learn English.
“He wasn’t just someone who enjoyed the facilities, he gave back in spades,” said Monsignor John Byrne.
“He had all the hallmarks of a man who believed in giving back.”
The eldest of four, Mr Culliton grew up in the Curragh, where his father Louis was an officer in the Irish Army. He won an academic scholarship to Cistercian College Roscrea and later studied Microbiology in Trinity.
He farmed in Rosenallis for a number of years and in recent times had trained people in time management and worked in the veterinary pharmaceutical industry.
His funeral mass took place in SS Peter and Paul’s Church in Portlaoise on Tuesday.
