Back in January, the first virtual BT Young Scientist Exhibition took place due to Covid-19 which saw Heywood CS student, Evan Hogg, win second place in his category.
Over 1,000 students from across the island of Ireland took part in the first ever virtual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.
The event this year took place from January 6-8 and of the Laois entries, one was successful.
Evan Hogg from Heywood CS was named the Social and Behavioural Senior Individual 2nd place winner.
Evan was recognised for his project ‘The regulations at play behind your physical activity: A statistical analysis into how we can use SDT to better motivate the nation to participate in physical activity’.
This is the third year in a row that the Leaving Cert student has won at the prestigious event.
In 2020, Evan won the Social and Behavioural Senior Individual first place award for his project ‘An investigation into how physical literacy and parental physical activity levels affect young people’s PAL.’
And back in 2019, as a TY student, Evan came third in the Individual Intermediate Biology category.
His project investigated whether it is more effective to do three ten minute runs a week or one thirty minute run a week over a prolonged period of time when it comes to improving fitness.
Evan’s project was one of seven that featured Laois students this year.
Four Portlaoise College projects, who all come from Transition Year students, were as follows:

This was the 57th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition and the first to ever take place virtually.
The exhibition is bringing together some of the country’s brightest young STEM minds as they compete to take home the coveted title of the BT Young Scientist & Technologists of the Year 2021.
