The death has occurred of Christy Paisley, the Portlaoise man who worked as caretaker of the local District Court for many years.
Aged in his early 80s, Mr Paisley passed away peacefully at his home in St John’s Square in Portlaoise over the weekend surrounded by his loving family.
Christy (known fondly as ‘Chap’) only retired from his job in the District Court in 2017, an occasion that merited a special presentation and the presence of judges, solicitors, barristers, gardai and politicians.
Charlie Flanagan, then Minister for Justice, described Christy as “a one-man institution who treated everyone with equal respect and kindness”.
“I don’t think anyone looked after the court so assiduously. Whether you were the most senior High Court judge visiting Portlaoise or a defendant on the steps of the courthouse awaiting sentence, everybody was the same to Christy,” said Minister Flanagan at the time.
Among those to pay tribute on the day were sitting district court judge Catherine Staines, Inspector Ollie Baker, state solicitor Donal Dunne, state prosecutor Will Fennelly, Portlaoise District Court office manager Catherine Magner and court office staff member Niamh Holden.
His work also involved being involved at the various election counts over the years, where Christy would have a word for everyone as he went about his business.
Christy (Chap) beloved husband of Rose and dearly loved father to Catherine and Noelle. Cherished grandfather to Sam, Carla and Rachel.
Deeply regretted by his loving family, sister Marie and her husband Séan, sons in law Rob and Jeff, brother Tony, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Reposing at Keegan’s Funeral Home, from 6.30 pm with rosary at 8pm on Monday evening.
Removal on Tuesday morning from his residnece to arrive at SS Peter and Paul’s Church for 12 noon requiem Mass. Interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise. Government Covid rules still apply.
