The special guest on this week’s LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast is Portarlington senior football manager Martin Murphy.
Murphy guided Portarlington to the 2020 SFC title last weekend, their first championship success since 2001.
He looks back on the fragmented season, what it was like to get the job done – and the challenge of retaining the title in the new campaign which gets underway in just over two weeks time.
He also chats about his success with other teams, notably with Stradbally in 2005 and 2016 as well as with Daingean in Offaly in 2002 and his time with other clubs, Tinryland in Carlow in 2011 and Timahoe in Laois in the late 1990s.
As well as that he looks back on his time as manager of the Portarlington rugby team and incredibly dramatic series of games with Portlaoise in the 2003 Towns Cup.
Plus he discusses how management has changed over the years and why he hasn’t been tempted to get involved in the inter-county scene.
