Dolores Murray lives on a suckler farm in Laois but until 2019 she could barely use many of the rooms in her home because of all of the clutter.
As an avid community volunteer and a keen follower of fashion, these hobbies had totally taken over much of the space and the rest was peppered with farming paraphernalia “It was organised chaos but it was way too much!”
Responding to an online call for applicants, Dolores’ sister Grace secretly applied to the RTÉ One programme Home Rescue on her behalf.
The show helps people who are struggling to curb clutter by sending in a crack team headed up by architect & interior designer Roisín Murphy and builder Peter Finn.
They toil to transform two rooms of the home, sponsored by IKEA Ireland.
“In the beginning the idea of it was daunting – when my sister Grace told me she had applied to the show for me I thought – no way!
“But then my daughter Lorraine convinced me to really look at the house and I thought, like, it was organised chaos but this could really give us a fresh start.”
Once Dolores came to terms with the idea of applying and got in touch with the team, she was thrilled to be selected.
She said that the team that came out to her were great and she made such a connection with them, especially with Róisín.
Olwyn and the team of Clutter Busters helped the family to sort through all of the clothes and clutter and decide what to keep, what to recycle and what just needed to be thrown in the bin!
“After the initial shakes about going through my clutter and deciding what to part with it became so easy!
“And Peter and his team are unbelievable – it’s amazing what they got done in such a short space of time! I had holes behind my cooker and in the walls and all of that was sorted out as part of the makeover.”
The team behind Home Rescue are again looking for applicants for the newest season, so if you’re fighting to control the clutter in your living spaces, you can go on the website today and fill out an application form.
Coco Television’s casting researcher, Suri Grennell says that once you fill out the form you will get a call from one of the team who will get to know you, your house and your clutter as thoroughly as possible.
If selected to be one the final six homes, you will get the same Home Rescue treatment as lucky Dolores! The team, alongside you and your family and friends, will help you to declutter your house and you will get a gorgeous makeover on two of the rooms in your home sponsored by IKEA Ireland.
“The makeover will be based on conversations that will have happened with the presenter, interior designer/architect Roisín Murphy, and the family, as to how the house could work better for them once the clutter is cleared,” said Suri.
“This could be anything from converting an unused bedroom to a home office, to creating a yoga and meditation room to help with stress, to making a multi-use space function properly.”
Since being on the programme Dolores has been on a mission to sort out the rest of the rooms and really make her house a home again.
“Now I walk into my kitchen and I get ideas of what I want to do with the rest of the house.
“I’ve already got the sitting room all organised and I’ve started on the bedrooms. I would say to anyone to go ahead and apply, it’s a great opportunity and gives you such a boost.”
