WATCH: Dramatic dangerous driving incident captured on Laois road

Dramatic footage of a dangerous driving incident on a Laois road has been captured.

Footage, shot from the vehicle behind, shows a van weaving dangerously from lane to lane on the N80.

The video begins as the driver of the van, believed to be a Volkswagen Crafter, is moving down the Windy Gap towards Stradbally.

The footage, understood to have been captured this morning, March 11, shows the driver leave their lane on several occasions.

They are involved in a series of near misses – and one potentially very serious one on the bad bend at the graveyard heading into the town.

The driver leaves their lane completely on the bend and just returns to the correct lane seconds before potentially colliding with an oncoming car.

The driver continues into the town, colliding with a number of kerbs before the vehicle behind manages to overtake them before persuading the driver of the van to pull over.

Confirming the incident, Laois Gardai said they had arrested and released a man ‘pending analysis’.

They said: “Portlaoise Gardaí are investigating incidents of Dangerous Driving this morning in Stradbally at approximately 7am 11th March 2021.

“Our colleagues have arrested a driver but are now appealing for anyone that passed through the area of Stradbally and the Windygap to contact them at Portlaoise Garda Station on 0578674100.

“They would be particularly interested in any dashcam footage you may have and if you witnessed anything to come forward.”
