There was sadness during the week following the news of the passing of Des Mulhare.
Mr Mulhare, who was in his 96th year, was a former prison officer and lived in Clondalkin in Dublin but was originally from Main Street in Stradbally.
Des played for the Laois footballers in the 1940s before a knee injury cut his career short at the age of 25.
He lined out at midfield against Cork, Kildare and Offaly in the 1948 league and against Westmeath in the 1949 championship.
Mr Mulhare’s grandson Seamus Mulhare, a referee from The Heath, paid a lovely tribute to him on Twitter.
He said: “RIP to a great man and grandfather, Des Mulhare.
“He will be greatly missed. We had great chats about Laois football.
“His time playing midfield with Bill Delaney for Stradbally and kicking for Laois in the 40’s before a knee injury stopped his inter county career at 25 years old.”
Beloved husband or the late Winnie and much loved father of Michael, Harry, Mairead, Mary, Elizabeth and her partner Jim.
Deeply regretted by all his family, daughters in Law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Mr Mulhare was laid to rest in Oakvale Cemetery on Thursday November 11.
May he Rest in Peace.
