The president of a national student’s body has called for clarity on this year’s Leaving and Junior Cert exams.
Reuban Murray, who is the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union President, wants to see the issue resolved by February 10 at the latest.
Department of Education officials are currently meeting with a range of stakeholders including parents, teachers, principals and students in a bid to find a way forward.
But Mountrath native Murray believes that a change of format is needed.
He made the call while speaking on Midlands 103 this morning.
The former Mountrath CS said: “We are past the point in time where the Leaving Cert and the Junior Cert can go ahead as planned prior to December.
“We need to find an alternative. There needs to be a form of continuous assessment implemented to help create calculated grades with the option to sit scaled down end of year exams.
“With the disruption that students have already faced with the cancellation of the mock exams in certain schools, there are inequities that have presented themselves that we need to address.”
