Portlaoise Gardai made two arrests and issued 12 fixed charge penalty notices earlier today after they stopped group of males who had travelled from Cork, Limerick and Waterford for a sulky race.
The group were stopped on the N77 Portlaoise to Abbeyleix Road.
“This is not essential travel,” said the Gardai in an update on Facebook.
Meanwhile the Gardai and HSE have also warned people to be alert to potential frauds associated with Covid-19 and vaccines.
“The HSE will not text you to ask you for your personal details,” said the HSE.
“We will not charge or ask for payment for a Covid-19 test or Covid vaccine.”
“Please be alert to scams,” added the Gardai. “Talk to family and friends that may not use social media platforms or that may be vulnerable to engaging with such calls, smishing or phishing.”

Of today’s new cases 17 of them are in Laois, meaning the county’s 14-day incidence rate drops from 776.9 to 673.
It is the fourth time in five days that the Laois 14-day rate has dropped and is now at its lowest since January 6. A week ago it stood at 964.6 while two weeks ago it was 843.
