Watch: Laois secondary school TYs launch video in support of 20×20 campaign for women’s sport

The Transition Year students in Portlaoise College have thrown their support behind the 20×20 campaign to promote and champion the involvement of women and girls in sport.

The group have produced a video which contains a mix of students and teachers who outline the reasons why they play different sports.

Ladies football, camogie, soccer and taekwondo are among the sports that are mentioned.

20×20 is a campaign presented by the Federation of Irish Sport that sets out to create a measurable cultural shift in our perception of women’s sport so that it will be seen as something strong, valuable and worth celebrating.

Deputy Principal Keith McClearn said: “We at Portlaoise College are backing the Campaign.

“As you can see from our video, we have fantastic role models amongst both the teachers and students in our school.

“Our Transition Year students will be holding a 20×20 event at Portlaoise College in the near future as 20×20 is about creating a more inclusive, healthier Ireland- it’s not a ‘women for women’ Initiative; it’s an ‘all of society for all of society’ movement. Stay tuned for further updates.

“The campaign championed by Ireland’s National Governing Bodies and Local Sports Partnerships is calling on the people of Ireland and all those involved in Irish sport and physical activity to get behind female sport in a concerted effort to increase media coverage, more female participation player, coach, referee and administrative level and more attendance at women’s games and events by 20% by the end of 2020.

“National Governing Bodies, Local Sports Partnerships, clubs, universities, schools, leisure centres, community groups and the general public are being asked to pledge one action to show their support by doing anything that can accelerate progress for women’s sport in Ireland and realise the key objectives.

“Individuals are being asked to share their pledge idea by visiting the 20×20 Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

“People can also show their support by simply putting the two 20×20 stripes on both cheeks and posting using #20×20 #ShowYourStripes #CantSeeCantBe online.”
