Planning permission sought for expansion of Laois train station car park

Ballybrophy Train Station car park is about to get an extensive upgrade if the planning application, which has been submitted to Laois County Council, is approved.

The station’s car park currently has 25 spaces but that has shown to be insufficient to meet demand.

According to Iarnrod Eireann, prior to the current restrictions on people travelling, parking in a disorganised manner on the roadway leading up to the station was common.

The upgrade to the station’s car park will see the number of spaces increase to 99, as well as the provision of 20 bicycle stands.

Accessibility around the station will also be improved with new footpaths, pedestrian crossings, lighting and signage being provided.

Subject to the planning application being approved, it is anticipated that these works will be completed by the end of next year.

This project is part of Iarnród Éireann’s car park expansion programme, which is funded by the National Transport Authority.

The news comes just days after local TD Brian Stanley made statements in the Dail on the need for the promotion and greater use of the Ballybrophy to Limerick rail service.

According to Mr Stanley, the line, which goes from South Laois all the way to Limerick, has far more potential than its current use.

He said that areas like Rathdowney, Borris-in-Ossory, Mountrath and Durrow could really benefit from an enhanced timetable.
