Gardai and members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit attended a house in Laois over night.
A suspect device was left outside a house in O’Moore Place in Portlaoise shortly after 2am.
Gardai were called and the area was subsequently evacuated.
The Army Bomb Disposal Unit then attended but they found the device to be a hoax.
Restrictions were lifted around 6am but Gardai say they are continuing to investigate what happened.
A spokesperson said: “Gardaí were called following reports of a suspect device left outside a house at O’Moore Place, Portlaoise shortly after 2am on Thursday 19 November 2020.
“The area was evacuated by Gardaí and a cordon put in place.
The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were notified and attended the scene.
“An examination was carried out on site and the device was deemed a hoax.
“The cordon was lifted shortly before 6am. Enquiries are ongoing.”
