This is remarkable.
A Laois teenager’s amazing act of kindness towards his grandfather is set to feature in a new TV ad.
17-year-old Eoin Connolly, who comes from Ballyfin, and was part of the Laois minor hurling panel this season, has been acting as his grandfather’s primary carer throughout much of this year.
He took on the role in March – at a time where the country was heading for Covid-19 pandemic.
And now the story of how he balanced caring for Joe and playing with Laois will feature in the new Electric Ireland TV ad.
Eoin explained: “You can’t plan for what life throws at you. You just have to roll with the punches and move on.
“When I became my grandfather’s primary care giver in March, my priorities changed. It was tough, but we made it work.
“People say it is a lot of responsibility for a 17-year-old but with the support of my family, I can continue to do what I love.
“There’s nothing minor about that!”
Eoin’s club Ballyfin paid tribute to his efforts on their Facebook page.
They said: “This is class folks. Our own Eoin Connolly.
“Watch Laois Minor Hurling Goalkeeper Eoin Connolly’s inspiring story of the role he played off the pitch in a year like no other.
“He became primary care giver to his Grandad Joe Connolly in March. Big responsibility on young shoulders!
“A fantastic example to us all. We in Ballyfin GAA are very proud of him. Doesn’t Joe look great too.”
Eoin is a Leaving Cert student in Mountrath CS and they also paid tribute to him.
They said: “We are so proud of our 6th year student Eoin Connolly who stars in the most recent Electric Ireland Minor Hurling Ad.
“Well done to you.”
