Laois County Council are to carry out a speed survey on the Edenderry Road in Portarlington.
Cllr Aidan Mullins requested that one be carried out in the interest of health and safety.
The Sinn Fein Cllr said: “I am delighted that the council have agreed to do this and I look forward to the results.
“This is a very straight stretch of road and there are many housing estates adjacent to it.
“We need to get people to slow down in the interest of potentially saving lives.
“There are a number of children living in these housing estates who could run out onto the road.”
Meanwhile, the same Cllr has requested that new litter bins be erected in The Swan.
Mr Mullins says he has spoken to some residents in the village who have identified two locations for these bins.
He said that bins were put in place in Timahoe recently and that they are collected every two weeks – an an extra ten minute trip to The Swan shouldn’t be that difficult to do.
In reply, Senior Engineer Philip McVeigh, said: “Laois County Council will consider this request following confirmation of the preferred locations.”
