A 27-acre parcel of “prime agricultural land” in Clough, Ballacolla, sold for over €400,000 at auction last week.
The land, which was handled by Hennessy Auctioneers, generated considerable interest and was put up for sale at a public auction in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel.
Complying with all Covid-19 restrictions, the auction was attended by a number of interested parties.
Located half a mile from Clough village, it was offered for sale in two lots – of 13 and 14 acres, both with generous road frontage.
It was withdrawn at €170,000 on each lot and negotiated privately and sold afterwards on the day to the highest bidder.
The sale included a circa one acre piece of ground on Lot 2 which sold separately.
The buyers were two local business men and a solicitor acting in trust.
Auctioneer John Hennessy confirmed that the total sale was over €400,000, meaning it was almost €15,000 an acre – well above the average sale of €11,523 recorded in Laois in 2019.
The national average in 2019 was €8,971.
