Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ronan Glynn have been invited to attend an emergency meeting of Laois County Council.
“We want answers,” says Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council Catherine Fitzgerald, who has written to the minister and to the CMO inviting them to a meeting this Tuesday following the government’s decision to enforce a new lockdown on the county until August 23.
Laois, Offaly and Kildare have been placed under a new partial lockdown until midnight on Sunday, August 23.
The decision follows a sharp rise in confirmed Coronavirus cases in the three counties in the past two weeks but Cllr Fitzgerald wants the authorities to come to Laois and explain in more detail the rationale behind the decision.
“We want answers as to why Laois was singled out. We want specific facts, figures and details in relation to why this action was taken.
“This was a huge decision which is for two weeks and three full weekends and it is only being lifted a couple of days before the schools are due to go back.”
Cllr Fitzgerald informed CEO of Laois County Council John Mulholland of her intention to call the meeting – and all five TDs in Laois-Offaly and Senator Pippa Hackett have been invited also.
Offaly County Council intend holding a similar meeting on Tuesday also.
The Laois meeting takes place at 3pm on Tuesday in the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise.
