Laois Gardai broke up a major rally in the Slieve Blooms on Saturday night, as almost 100 cars gathered for a high-speed race.
The Laois Divisional Roads Policing Unit broke up the noisy ‘meet’ and sent drivers home, after handing penalty notices to some of the culprits.
Gardaí stopped almost 100 cars in Glendine and Kinnity on the Laois-Offaly border last night, where drivers had organised to meet for another high-speed mountain rally.
The Garda mobility app was used to check on vehicles and drivers.
A few minor offences were detected and are being dealt with by fixed charge penalty notices.
Laois-Offaly gardaí said today: “Let there be no misunderstanding. We do not want to see this and those attending cause distress to the people that reside in the communities these ‘meets’ occur in.
“The location is in the Slieve Bloom Environmental Park and it may look uninhabited but there are people living in the area.”
This issue was raised recently at the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District meeting, when councillors appealed for greater garda presence to stop similar events taking place.
