Laois County Council have announced that Main Street in Portlaoise will be closed to traffic from July 2 to August 30.
Vehicles will not be permitted access from the junction of Railway Street to Church Avenue from 11am to 5.30pm each day.
With effect from Thursday July 2, traffic flow from Railway Street will be from Main Street to Tower Hill.
The decision comes, Laois County Council say, following recent consultations.
They say: “Following recent consultations, with effect from 11.00am on Thursday, 2nd July, Lower Main Street Portlaoise (from the junction of Railway Street to Church Avenue) will be closed to vehicular traffic between the hours of 11.00am and 5.30pm each day.
“This temporary closure will be in operation up to and including Sunday 30th August.
“Please also note that, with effect from 8.00am on Thursday, 2nd July, traffic flow on Railway Street will be from Main Street to Tower Hill.
“Portlaoise is open for business and let’s meet there. Support local businesses. Shop local.”
Calls for the pedestrianisation of Main Street began back in February and discussions on how to do it have been ongoing ever since.
Last month, it was revealed that a section would be pedestrianised and this has been confirmed for the next two months.
