This week’s Cumann na mBunscol memories piece looks back on the action from the football finals in 2011.
As always the football competitions were played in the autumn, culminating in a couple of hectic days action in O’Moore Park.
As always there was plenty of stars of the future on display with the girls Division 1 final between Emo and The Heath, which Emo won narrowly, seeing Emma Lawlor and Erone Fitzpatrick come up against each other.
They’d go on to play many times on the same team with the fine Scoil Chríost Rí teams in Portlaoise as well as in the blue and white of Laois.
In the boys Division 1 final, Emo and St Paul’s Portlaoise played out a thrilling draw before Emo won the replay after an equally good game the following week. Padraig Kirwan scored 1-5 for Emo in the replay with Conor McKenna hitting 2-3 for St Paul’s.
In the Division 2 girls final, future Laois senior player Eva Galving top scored with eight points as Portarlington got the better of Ballyadams while St Fiacc’s of Graiguecullen won the boys Division 2 final as they beat Ballyroan.
Kate Whelan and Arianna Mezzapelle scored three goals each as Ballyroan beat Sacred Heart of Portlaoise in the Division 3 girls final while Rory Doyle go three goals and Niall Dunne got seven points for Rath as beat Derrylamogue in the boys Division 3 final.
Also on that Rath team was Sean O’Flynn who is now on the Laois senior team as well as Alan Kinsella and Matthew Byron who have played with the Laois U-20s in recent seasons.
Current Laois senior hurler James Keyes was on the Raheen team that beat Ballyadams in the Division 4 final while the Graiguecullen girls made it a double for St Fiacc’s as they beat Clough.
There was also wins for Derrylamogue, Shanahoe and Clonaghadoo in the girls finals while Killanure, Clonaghadoo, Paddock and Knock claimed success in the other boys finals.
Maggie O’Toole struck an amazing 6-4 for the Shanahoe girls as they got the better of a Paddock side that Odile Fitzpatrick scored five goals.
Evan Hunt was the star for Clonaghadoo boys with 1-9 while Anna Mangan’s four goals for the girls ensured the school had double reason to celebrate.
