Laois Gardai broke up an illegal road race in Portlaoise this morning.
On an early morning patrol, Gardai came across a number of vehicles parked up at The Midway.
They discovered that the 11 occupants of the three vehicles had travelled from Cork to take party in an illegal road race.
LaoisToday understands that this was to be a sulky race – A sulky is an unprotected, lightweight cart, which is usually drawn by a horse.
Unofficial sulky harness races on public roads are popular among the Travelling community.
Gardai sent them home and a file has been prepared for the DPP for breach of travel restrictions.
They say: “Early this morning, members of Portlaoise Garda were out patrolling and came across these vehicles parked up at the Midway.
“Gardaí discovered that the 11 occupants in the 3 vehicles had travelled from all the way from Cork for an illegal road race.
“This was definitely not an essential journey. Gardaí reminded them of the current Covid-19 restrictions and were directed to return home.
“File to the DPP for breach of travel restrictions.”
