Talking Politics: Road trip to the Dail, Independents Day & where now for Sinn Fein?

And so it goes on.

Another week of talks, discussions and we’re still no real closer to a new Government.

LaoisToday made a trip to Leinster House during the week as the TDs arrived for the first day of the 33rd Dail and while there was a carnival type atmosphere as they arrived, it was a different story as they were leaving.

Leo Varadkar made the trip to the Áras to inform Michael D Higgins that he was resigning as Taoiseach though he and his cabinet colleagues remain in a caretaker capacity until a new Government is formed.

With Sinn Fein unlikely to get the numbers for a left-leaning coalition, the remaining options are a Sinn Féin-Fianna Fáil combination or a so-called Grand Coalition of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael along with possibly the Greens and/or the Social Democrats.

In this week’s LaoisToday Talking Politics Podcast, presenter Steven Miller is joined by John Whelan to look back at the week that was.

We also chat about the upcoming Senate elections, the battle for the Labour leadership, how the various independent TDs are aligning themselves and who else we met in the Dail.
