Portlaoise Panthers and Scoil Chriost Ri basketballer Ciara Byrne is the worthy recipient of ‘Sports Star(s) of the Month’ as she picked up her award in Property Partners Buggy.
The award honours outstanding individuals in local sport on a monthly basis presented by Tommy Buggy in partnership with LaoisToday.
The 17-year-old Fifth Year student enjoyed a simply remarkable month of sporting success.
It all began on January 22 when Byrne led Scoil Chriost Ri to School’s U-19 ‘A’ Girls Cup glory.
This was the first All-Ireland U-19 ‘A’ basketball title in the school’s history and Byrne top-scored in a 70-38 win over Our Lady of Mercy Waterford.
After that it was back to action with Portlaoise Panthers were Byrne played in two National Cup finals in the space of three days.
On January 24, Ciara scored eight points as the Panthers defeated Waterford Wildcats by 76 to 53 to claim U-18 National Cup glory.
Two days later, Byrne was back on the court again as she, despite only being 17, stepped up to play for the Senior team in the Division 1 Cup final.
In a dramatic affair, Byrne once again played a crucial role as the Panthers won 75-71 against Trinity Meteors.
Anyone that wins three All-Ireland medals in the space of a couple of days is certainly more than worthy of our award.
