As in keeping with how he performed across the Laois-Offaly constituency, Sinn Fein’s Brian Stanley got almost double that of his nearest challenger in the Portlaoise area.
According to the Fine Gael tallies, that have been seen and studied by LaoisToday, Stanley got over 3,600 first preference votes in the Portlaoise Municipal District, an area that includes the town itself, Abbeyleix, Ballyroan, Raheen, Knock, Ballinakill and The Rock, close to Mountmellick.
Of the 28 boxes where tallies are available, he led the way in 26 of them with just the boxes in Knock and Raheen seeing more first preferences for Sean Fleming.
Across the district, Brian Stanley got over 34% of the vote, just short of double what Sean Fleming of Fianna Fail had with 1,840 (17.39%).
Charlie Flanagan (Fine Gael) was next in line ahead of Noel Tuohy of Labour and Pauline Flanagan of Fianna Fail.
The tallies aren’t 100% accurate but do give a very good indication of voting trends. In this instance, we have seen 28 of the 31 boxes. Tallies from two of the 18 boxes in Holy Family School in Portlaoise aren’t available while only one of the two Ballyroan boxes are tallied.
Of the non-Laois candidates, Pippa Hackett (Green Party) was sixth across the Portlaoise area ahead of Stephen Tynan of People Before Profit.
Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy, who lost her seat for Fine Gael, was the best of the Offaly candidates in the Portlaoise area, just ahead of Carol Nolan who retained her seat.
John Leahy was the worst-performing candidate in the Portlaoise area with just 38 votes or 0.35% according to the tallies.
In just the Portlaoise town area (boxes from Holy Family and Knockmay), Brian Stanley got 36% of the vote, compared to 29% in the non-Portlaoise town part of the district. In two of the Knockmay boxes he broke 60% while he was just shy of 50% in one of the boxes in Holy Family.
In the Portlaoise town area, Noel Tuohy was fourth overall in first preferences, with Pauline Flanagan fifth. In the non-Portlaoise town are (Abbeyleix, Ballyroan etc), Tuohy dropped out of the top five with Pippa Hackett performing well there.
We have totalled the Portlaoise Municpal District as well as separating them out to Portlaoise and the non-Portlaoise boxes.
We have also listed all 31 polling stations so you can see how your area voted.
We will be publishing the Graiguecullen-Portarlington and Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick districts over the coming days.
