A serious accident has taken place in Abbeyleix this afternoon.
LaoisToday understands that there was an incident involving a pedestrian and a truck at around 2.15pm.
Traffic is very heavy as a result and Main Street is now closed in the town.
Major incident in town centre requiring all emergency services including the Army Air support helicopter is causing major traffic delays
According to AA Roadwatch: “Main Street in Abbeyleix, part of the N77, is closed following a serious incident. Avoid the town if possible.”
An eye witness said: “There has been an accident in Abbeyleix involving a pedestrian and a truck.
“Traffic is building up and emergency services are here.
“Hopefully nobody will be seriously hurt.”
A Garda spokesperson said: “Traffic is extremely heavy at present in the town.
“But we have no further information at this time.”
The Abbeyleix community Facebook page confirmed that the incident requires all emergency services including the Army Air support helicopter is causing major traffic delays and to avoid for the foreseeable future.
