This Christmas Scoil Chríost Rí are calling on all staff, students and parents to donate their once loved children’s books to those who are less fortunate, children who find themselves living in temporary emergency accommodation this Christmas.
The Book Drive launched last week and already the girls involved are energised by the thoughts of letting the books they once loved, live again.
It involves the Green School’s Committee, the Development Education committee, the WellRead Committee, the Library committee and a collection of students from across all year groups.
The books can be donated in two categories. 0-5 years old and 5-13 years old.
As a school we know the importance of spreading a love of reading and what better way to do it than by giving the magical gift of a book this Christmas, allowing children to explore their imagination.
The aim is to collect 600 children’s books which will be carefully and beautifully wrapped by our students and donated to the Peter McVerry Trust with a touching poem composed by a 6th Year English student Jill Cushen.
‘These books have been loved treasured and used,
Now its their time to keep you amused,
A dog ear on the corner or the rip of a page,
Only means they should be cherished for their old age,
A scribble down the side or a name at the start,
Points to its history in which you will play a part,
Now it’s your turn to read, enjoy or adore
Just as another reader did before.’
