The construction of the long-awaited new library on Main Street in Portlaoise is on course to start in the coming months following news today that the Government has approved the tender for the €5 million project.
Laois County Council will be overseeing the project which has received significant funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development.
With the tender approved, construction should start in the foreseeable future at the site of the old Shaw’s Department Store on Main Street Portlaoise.
“The relocation of the library to the old Shaw’s building on the Main Street is a boost for the town,” said Minister Charlie Flanagan previously.
“I hope it will help breathe new life into the centre of the town which has suffered greatly since the closure of Shaw’s Department Store.”
“The increased footfall in the area which will help boost businesses in the Main Street and centre of the town.
“The library will service the large population in the town, as well as schools. The new library will make a significant difference for the people of Portlaoise.”
